Congress Needs Speed Reading Courses Just To Keep Up
I, for one, am having a hard time understanding how, without reading the legislation on the table for health care reform there are so many people in Congress stepping up in opposition of the bill.
This conversation on health care reform seems like it has been going on for months, yet the people responsible for passing the legislation have not even taken the time to read the bill but they feel justified in sitting in staunch opposition of it.
Democratic Congressman John Conyers has gone on record as saying “what good is reading the bill if it’s 1,000 pages, if you don’t have 2 days and 2 lawyers to find out what it means after you have read the bill.” Conyers goes on to state that most bills brought before them to vote on are voted on without reading the bills.
However he is not the only one who scoffed at reading the bill, Republican House Minority Leader, John Boehner has admitted to not reading the bill, while confirming the fact that not one body of Congress read the 1,100 pages. As he throws the bill down and questions “who has time to read it.”
Having not read the bill, how can any member of Congress represent a truthful assessment for or against the bill? After being informed that Congress has not taken the time to read the bill, how can “we the people” believe anything they say regarding the bill?
I recently watched a YouTube video where Bill Maher, without hesitation or feeling the need for explanation, called America a “stupid country.” Although he eventually gave, as reason for this statement, that Sara Palin could be president, which for me was reason, in and of it self, to confirm the stupidity of America, I say the voting on a bill without reading the bill is another form of confirmation that America is stupid.
For this reason, after listening to these people, who are in charge of signing off on legislation, proudly admit that they do not even take the time to read the legislation, I have to say I agree with Maher.
To witness how some Americans jump on the band wagon behind these Congressmen/Senators in opposition of something they do not have a clue on, because they have not taken the time to read the paperwork, have admitted to this lack of desire to read it, thereby having no real knowledge of the specifics but stand in opposition of it, I say Bill Maher hit the nail on the head.
We are a nation of “the blind, leading the blind” and we all fall into the ditch together; how comforting.
After Obama’s visit to Ohio, Republican John Boehner, in a Press Release, states, among other things, that “The Democrats’ government takeover of health care, also diminish quality and reduce access to care. It puts government bureaucrats – not patients and doctors – in charge of personal medical decisions. It leads to the rationing and even denial of care. And it cuts Medicare, taking choices away from millions of seniors, including many in rural parts of our state.
He further states that “The Mayo Clinic put it best earlier this week, saying of the Democrats’ bill, ‘the proposed legislation misses the opportunity to help create higher quality, more affordable health care for patients.’ Republicans have proposed a comprehensive plan to make health care more affordable and accessible for the American people, and we reached out to the President months ago to work on a bipartisan plan. President Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress should scrap their costly plan and start over with a bipartisan approach that reduces costs, increases access, and creates a climate of new jobs.”
While the Mayo Clinic did say something along those lines they also said there are some positive elements of the bill as well. Reading between the lines of Mayo Clinic comments, the main concern is with payments made to them through the current Medicare/Medicaid plans, payments to doctors, money, although they disguise this discussion behind the concept of “patient care.”
Without having read the bill how can Boehner make these allegations? Would you not have to read the bill to know for sure that these things would take place? Wouldn’t you have to read the bill, in it’s entirety to understand the full effect of the process. These words are demonstrative of the very real fact that Politicians will say anything to “we the people” in effect playing us for stupid, gullible, trusting fools to believe these comments while knowing, through his own admissions, that he did not even take the time to read the bill.
In an effort to create divisions, discredit Democrats, bring about a “Waterloo” in the current administration, transparency of our government is happening. While it is not the transparency Obama was in favor of, I am seeing a side of politics I only imagined before. The political games that have been played discretely behind closed doors are coming to light, and truth is – it’s not a pretty picture.
Instead it is a view of lies, games, deceit, petty bickering, and refusal to take the time to read legislation which critically affects, relating the information found within the legislation to “we the people.”
There are just as many for this proposal as against this proposal but the longer it stays out in the open without a decision taking place, the more time that is given to propaganda to make this bill into something it may not be as the pros and the cons take to the airwaves via advertisement to sway the minds of the public.
And that’s the way I see it!!!
