A self-fulfilling prophecy, according to the dictionary, is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true. For some the solar eclipse is a sign from above that indicates violence and turmoil to come. Could this be a self fulfilling prophecy or is superstition alone at play.

According to Yahoo News, this seems to be the belief of many in countries such as India and China as the longest lasting solar eclipse of the 21st century is scheduled to occur Wednesday, July 22, 2009. After the eclipse, what carries this “superstition” even further is that come September 2009, Saturn moves from Leo into Virgo. Whenever this has happened over the last 200 years the consensus of some seems to be that there has been “either a world war or a mini world war.”

Ironically, this eclipse is most visible from within a narrow corridor that expands the Eastern Hemisphere. It begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma and China. According to NASA, after leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean and is scheduled to last a total of 6 minutes and 39 seconds.

There are other areas that will witness a partial eclipse as the moon continues it passage between the sun and earth. While some view this as a “natural” occurrence, others predict doom and gloom. Rooted deep in Indian society is the belief that this event could cause injury to newborns coming into the world at the time of the eclipse and advise pregnant women to stay indoors.

Astrologers foresee a rise in communal and regional violence in the days following the eclipse. With predictions of some kind of attack perpetrated by Kashmiri separatist or al-Qaeda on Indian soil. Others of the Hindu persuasion, feel this is a time the sun with its life giving qualities is swallowed by the moon, snuffing out its life-giving light and causing food to become inedible and water undrinkable.

Others have taken cruises or booked flights at between $2,000 and $3,000 dollars to witness this rare occasion from a distance of 41,000 feet. From a spiritual point of view, this is an excellent time for worship; better results than on any ordinary day; this in part due to the “opposite attracting forces” that are very powerful during an eclipse.

National Geographic News has suggested that because of the densely populated regions this eclipse will pass over, this may be the most viewed eclipse ever. Whatever connotations that are put on this spectacle, people are flocking to witness the sight with many hotels booked along the path of the eclipse. Researchers are gathering up equipment to see what they can garner regarding the sun from this occurrence,

Weather permitting, this will be a show viewed and appreciated my many. What follows, only time will tell for sure but with the chaos that is brewing, I hope this phenomenal display is not a self-fulfilling prophecy followed by the violence of the predictions but instead prayers of the heart, for peace and understanding in the world, are heard and acknowledged bringing a new dimension of love to the world – I still have hope.

And that’s the way I see it!!!
