Is “Political Correctness” Putting Our Troops In Danger In Afghanistan
A “kinder, gentler war” is raging in Afghanistan taking into account the unnecessary loss of life of civilians. In an attempt to gain civilian trust, a new tactical directive has been issued that basically instructs our troops to assume more risk to make sure they do not harm civilians with a dedication to restoring the ravages of war on the economy and infrastructure of Afghan. However, as our troops are gradually returning home from extended stays in Iraq, our troops are now losing their life in Afghanistan as this war becomes more complicated and deadly.
When the bombings in Mumbai occurred in the latter part of last year, Pakistan officials denied the existence of Taliban in their land however this morning when I woke up, I watched a CNN Report on how the Taliban in Pakistan were holding camps for kids as young as 11-years old being trained to be effective suicide bombers. They cited the reason for using such young children was because it is easier for youngster to pass through security checks.
Insurgents in Afghanistan perceive this “kinder, gentler war” as a weakness and have stooped to taking women and children hostage, stealing the clothing of the woman to dress up as women and have the children escort them to escape capture. While dressing from head to foot in women’s clothing, Marines are hesitant to cause a potential cultural incident by ordering these cross-dressing insurgents to be patted down for weapons. This could eventually lead to a very serious, even deadly cautionary tactic for the Marines fighting on the ground in Afghanistan.
A total of six American soldiers died Monday in the region. Four were killed by a suicide bomber in Kandahar and two more were killed by an explosion in the south. While I do not condone war in any fashion, I understand that collateral damage is part of any war.
Are we risking the lives of these brave Marines in an attempt to stay on the side of “political correctness” in a land that had plenty of opportunity to stop the insurgents before it came to this point but instead chose to live in denial and what I perceived even then to be arrogance as they refused the requests of India to locate and arrest the Taliban India and the world knew where residents of Pakistan?
These insurgents are showing that they do not care about the lives of others; they only care about their mission to create chaos and destruction using women and children to accomplish these feats when necessary as was the case in Khan Neshin after insurgents ran into a compound that held women and children and escaped by dressing in women’s clothing.
Yet, our troops are ordered to tip-toe around and second guess what they see, for even as those cross-dressing insurgents escaped right before the watchful eyes of the Marines that had been in a stand off with them for at least an hour, the troops noticed that the “women” who had walked away had broad-shoulders and hairy feet but their options were limited and rather than to create a problem, they allowed these “women” to walk away unchecked.
As our troops protect the people of Afghanistan, who will protect our troops; how many American lives are disposable in battles in foreign countries that have allowed the Taliban/al-Qaeda to grow and thrive in their lands? In our efforts to protect these people, why are such unrealistic, unsafe restrictions placed on our efforts? Are we fighting a war that will never end?
And that’s the way I see it!!!!
