I Love My Father But This Is My Life To Live
Jeff Jordan, oldest son of legendary Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, has decided to go for what he knows and has dropped out of the life of basket ball to pursue a real academic education. I know this is not my usual flow but I had to give Jeff some love and support for following his dreams!!
Jeff Jordan was a four-year high school honor roll student and earned an academic scholarship to University of Illinois. In 2007 he enrolled at the University as a psychology major and became a preferred “walk-on” basketball player at the University of Illinois. However after two years of playing ball at the University and to the surprise of nearly everyone, yesterday he announced that he would be leaving basketball to focus on school and “life after basketball”.
With the support of his coach who has stated “we will miss him” and the support of his team members, Jeff chose a path very different from his father and hopefully with the support of his father. Walking in your father’s shadow when your father has been someone who was bigger than life is a difficult path to follow - people have high expectations; having the courage to choose the path that is more suited to your own expertise takes a strong minded person and with four straight years as an honor roll student in high school, it would seem academics is his forte.
Michael Jordan commanded basketball – to me he had class, style and owned the court, much like Tiger Woods in golf. Everybody can not be Mike and while Jeff may have had basketball skills, he may have felt more comfortable with books. I applaud Jeff’s decision and although I understand that sometimes you make your parents proud by following in their footsteps, you make yourself better by living your life the way you see fit.
Good Luck Jeff – may you keep searching for that place in the world that you create for yourself, stay focused on your books and have some fun as well – this is “your” time to shine, your life to live and your choices to make. Stay on the path of education for it will carry you a long way.
And that’s the way I see it!!
